In 1997, Rock singer-songwriter turned record Producer Tsunku of Sharan Q created the group known as Morning Musme. Tsunku as the composer, composed a vast majority of the group's songs over the years.
Morning Musume, the lead group of Hello! Project that specializes in upbeat, pop-oriented music coupled with dance performance rose to fame in a very short time. The group also produced several splinter groups, and often collaborates with other Hello! Project acts. The group's name can be translated as "Morning Girls" or "Morning Daughters". It consists of members mostly in their late adolescence and early 20's. The average age of the group members has remained more or less unchanged since its original formation because the group maintains a "school-like" system for their continuous line-up changes, with older members "graduating" and new, usually younger members joining.
In Year 2001, the group saw the 2 youngest members in history to join Morning Musume, Tsuji Nozomi and Kago Ai, whom were both aged 12 at the time they joined Morning Musume.
In Year 2003, Morning Musume had the largest amount of members in the group, a total of 15 members, consisting of members from 1st to 6th generation.
Every year, Tsunku would hold nationwide auditions to recruit more idols into the group. As of current, they are the only Female Group in Japan with the longest history at 18 years.
As of current, the group is now in it's 12th Generation and performing as Morning Musume '16 with a total of 11 members. Since then, there has been divisions and sub-groups consisting of members from Hello!Project affiliated groups.
